4.1 magnitude earthquake felt in the GTA and Ontario

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake in Quebec was felt in southern Ontario on Sunday.

The earthquake shook homes in both provinces just after 8 a.m. on Sunday.

The epicentre was 75 kilometres north-northwest of Maniwaki, Que., and about 150 kilometres northeast of Pembroke, according to Natural Resources Canada.

As of Monday morning, no reports of damage. Typically, an earthquake between 2.5 to 5.4 is often felt but only causes minor damage. Earthquakes of 6.1 and higher can cause significant damage, according to the Michigan Tech Earthquake Magnitude Scale.

Sunday’s earthquake was felt as far away as Brampton, Oakville, Toronto, according to Natural Resources Canada’s self reporting site.

Over 2,200 people reported feeling the quake.

The largest earthquake recorded in the area in recent years was a magnitude 5.2 on May 17, 2013. People in Ontario also reported feeling that quake.
