Vehicle theft has become a widespread problem in Mississauga and Brampton, with more vehicles being stolen than you might think.
According to Peel police’s crime data, a total of 395 vehicles were stolen over a recent period of 30 days (Jan. 26 to Feb. 24).
That’s an average of 13 vehicles being stolen every day.
The data indicates that 209 of the vehicle thefts took place in Mississauga, while the other 186 took place in Brampton.
Most of the stolen vehicles were regular automobiles, but about 91 trucks were stolen as well.
Just in comparison to our neighbours in Toronto they have had 1010 vehicles stolen so far this year in 2022.
The higher number of thefts is likely related to the cold weather, with many residents leaving their vehicles idle and unattended as it warms up — giving thieves an opportunity to steal the vehicle.
Following an increase in vehicle thefts last September, police offered following tips to help residents protect their vehicles:
- If possible, park vehicles in a locked garage
- Install GPS trackers in vehicles if possible
- Install steering wheel lock systems
- Store vehicle keys/fobs away from the exterior walls of your home
- Consider storing keys/fobs in Faraday boxes
- Ensure you always lock car doors and roll up your windows
- Ensure there is adequate lighting in the area of driveways and entranceways
“Homeowners are encouraged to become familiar with their neighbours and be cognizant of suspicious activity, and report that activity to police,” said police.
