“What has happened in the last 10 years or so to the price of rent or housing in general is absolutely heartbreaking,”one person wrote on Reddit. “This is the cost I would expect to pay if i lived in Hawaii, not Mississauga.”

The rent is as high or higher than a three-bedroom home, other people noted.

“I’m splitting 3600 total for a house wtf is this basement,” one person said.

Other people noted the apartment’s price is a sign of the times.

“Nice apartment but the rent is insanity,” one person wrote. “People in Mississauga are paying far too much for homes and rentals.”

Mississauga is one of the most expensive places to rent in Canada, according to the latest rent reports.

A one-bedroom apartment was an average of $2,339 a month and a two-bedroom around $2,702.

Reddit posters also wonder if this basement apartment is up to code. It is difficult to verify with the photos posted online, and the owner did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In Ontario, a basement apartment must have windows sized at least five per cent of the floor area in the living room and kitchen. Windows in bedrooms must be at least 2.5 per cent of the floor area.
