Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the deaths of a 52-year-old man and two family members following a distress call to police last night from a home in the town of Huntsville in the Muskoka region.

The SIU said in a news release on Saturday that the incident began around 9 p.m., when a man contacted police, claiming to have harmed two relatives inside a home, stating that he was armed.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates incidents involving police and citizens where injury or a death has occurred.

The OPP responded by deploying a team that included crisis negotiators and the Emergency Response Team.

The team set up a perimeter around the home and communicated with a man on the phone.

According to the SIU, communication ceased shortly after, prompting officers to deploy a drone to search the home. Inside, officers discovered the bodies of two women and one man.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case with the post-mortem scheduled for Monday.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation including video or photos to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529
