The year isn’t over yet but Mississauga has already broken the annual precipitation record for 2024.
After heavy rain at Pearson Airport on Sunday night, the total precipitation for the year is 1052.6 millimetres, Environment and Climate Change Canada said in a post on X.
This breaks the 2008 record for the highest amount of precipitation between 1938 and 2024. The 2008 total was 1049.6 millimetres.
The record comes after major two rain events, which caused extensive flooding in the summer.
The first “100-year storm” hit Mississauga on July 16. A total of 106 mm of rain fell in the span of a few hours, also leading to emergency rescues, and flooded roads and homes.
Then over the weekend of Aug. 17 and 18, as much as 170 mm of rain fell in some areas of Mississauga. The deluge flooded roads and damaged properties. Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services conducted 27 water rescues.
Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish said the storms tested the city’s infrastructure systems, and officials are actively assessing how to improve and adapt.
As for homes damaged in the storms, impacted residents were encouraged to apply for a $1,000 payment from the Residential Compassionate Flood Relief Grant. The city also offered rebates of up to $6,800 for eligible flood prevention measures.
In September, the Insurance Bureau of Canada said the summer of 2024 ranks as the most-destructive season in Canadian history for insured losses due to severe weather including floods, fires and hailstorms.
In only two months, July and August, this summer eclipsed the worst year on record and has pushed the 2024 year-to-date tally to over $7.7 billion, the bureau said.
The previous record was $6.2 billion set in 2016.
