In what organizers are calling Canada’s largest charity hockey game, Hockey Night in Brampton raised over $14 million to help build a new hospital in the city.

The money raised from the event, which was held Aug. 21, 2024, at the CAA Centre, will go in support of the William Osler Health System Foundation and the construction a second hospital in Brampton.

“It’s a homerun for our community and we need it,” said Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown of the charity hockey game. “We have to build a second hospital and we’re going to do whatever we can to raise the funds to make sure we can build this hospital.”

Some 4,000 people attended the contest which featured current Toronto Maple Leafs stars Max Domi and Mitch Marner as well as former NHL greats like Chris Pronger, Shayne Corson and Ryan Getzlaf.

Team Marner, coached by former Leafs great Doug Gilmour, defeated Team Domi, coached by former Toronto captain Wendel Clark, 12-9.

“As a Type 1 diabetic, I value my health just like everyone else does, but (this has) a special place in my heart,” Domi said before the game. “I’m really excited to be out here. It’s a huge honour.”

“Ninety percent of the healthcare we receive happens at our local community hospital,” said Ken Mayhew, of the William Osler Health System Foundation. Events like tonight, Hockey Night In Brampton, thanks to Mayor Brown and Council are going to (make) a huge difference to the lives of everyone in Brampton.”

Brown is thankful for all pitched in to make the night a success.
