Brampton’s own Tyler Seguin helped bring the Dallas Stars one step closer to the Stanley Cup with two assists in his 130th NHL playoff bout.
The Stars went into Monday’s game tied 1-1 in the Western Conference finals against the Edmonton Oilers with the Canadian club holding home-ice advantage, coming out strong with superstar Connor McDavid slipping a goal past Dallas’ netminder in just over two minutes of play.
Edmonton doubled their lead just a few minutes into the first period, but the tables turned in the second with Dallas left winger Jason Robertson driving home a one-timer shot set up by Brampton’s Seguin to cut the Oiler’s lead in half.
Dallas looked to have the game in the bag but a back-and-forth third period saw the Oilers fight to a 3-3 tie until another Robertson set-up by Seguin to put Edmonton on the backfoot. An empty net goal sealed the deal, securing a win for the Stars on what was Seguin’s 130th playoff game.
Born in Brampton, Seguin has hockey in his blood. His mother was a member of the Brampton Canadettes Girls Hockey Association while his father played hockey for the University of Vermont. After moving back to Brampton he played for the Toronto Nationals and was drafted second overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2010 NHL draft.
The Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2011, giving Seguin an NHL championship win in his rookie season. The Brampton native brought the cup to his hometown following the win with a zamboni ride in Chinguacousy Park, and also received a Key to City.
Seguin and the Stars will look to increase their lead in the series against the Oilers in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals on Wednesday night in Edmonton.
