A 12-year-old boy is dead after he went missing while swimming at an Ontario beach, police say.

Ontario Provincial Police said that just before noon on Sunday, officials received a 911 call requesting help in finding a youth who was last seen swimming at Huronia Park in the Town of Penetanguishene, around 56 kilometres north of Barrie.

Emergency crews arrived and “immediately” began searching on land and in the water, the OPP said.

In an update, police said that a body had been recovered at around 7:17 p.m. Sunday from the search area of the waters.

“The 12-year-old male youth was confirmed as the subject of the missing person search and was sadly pronounced deceased by attending County of Simcoe paramedics,” police said.

“The investigation into the cause of death will continued by the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.”
