A one-time Brampton resident has won the top prize on one of Canada’s top-rated reality TV shows.

Tychon Carter-Newman, 29, was declared the winner of Big Brother Canada on Thursday night by out-lasting and out-gaming a dozen other competitors on the popular two-month long show.

As the winner, Carter-Newman claims the $100,000 grand prize.

Currently living in Montreal, Carter-Newman grew up in Brampton and attended St. Edmund Campion Secondary School before going off to play college basketball. He graduated from McGill University in 2017 with a master’s degree in urban planning.

Carter-Newman said he was proud to be the first Black person to win the show in North America and that was one of the reasons he wanted to be a contestant.

“I think that was really a big part of why I wanted to play this game,” he told ET Canada. “It is because I wanted to be that person…or making sure that happened.”

On the final night when previously evicted houseguests returned to pick the winner, Carter-Newman won by a 6-1 vote over the runner-up Breydon White.
