Three Brampton residents were charged and their holiday baking plans were likely foiled in an unusual theft of $1,000 worth of butter in Guelph.

Butter is getting more pricey these days — up to $12 for a pound in some stores — but this theft will end up costing the culprits way more.

And the three Brampton men may have had their “holiday baking plans interrupted”, Guelph Police said in a press release today (Dec. 28).

The incident began shortly before 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve when police were called to a grocery store in the south end of Guelph.

Two men were spotted placing a case of butter in a cart and walking out of the store to a waiting vehicle, police said.

Officers responded and found the suspect vehicle outside another nearby grocery store.

Two men were in the vehicle and a third man exited the store and approached officers.

Police said a witness reported the third man had abandoned a cart just outside the store.

Officers checked the cart and found more butter.

In total, officers recovered 144 sticks of butter and 17 containers of ghee butter. The value was estimated at more than $1,000.

Three Brampton men, aged 40, 29 and 25 years old, were arrested and charged with theft under $5,000, police said.

One man allegedly provided a false name and he was further charged with obstructing police, police added.

All have been released with upcoming court dates.
