One million sunflowers are now in bloom in Mississauga and there is a special event on this weekend.

Lakeview Community Partners Limited, the developer of Lakeview Village, first planted the one million sunflowers in 2019. In previous years, the flowers started to bloom in July but this year organizers planned for a September flowering.

Lakeview Village is planned to be a 16,000-home community with parkland and a landmark public pier.

The field next to the developer’s Discovery Centre has been transformed with the sunflowers and an outdoor art trail.

Chairs and benches – crafted by local sawmiller Sawmill Sid who re-purposes wood into beautiful creations – line the trail.

Once the sunflowers are in full bloom, they are typically in bloom for two to three weeks. Sunflowers have a finite bloom cycle, and naturally wilt at the end of this period. They will be re-planted and grow again next year.

The Art Alfresco event planned for Sept. 7 was postponed to Saturday, Saturday, Sept. 14 due to rain.

Art Alfresco, an event in partnership with the Mississauga Arts Council, will see seven local artists painting the flowers and landscape “en plein air” (outdoors) from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The sunflowers can be found behind the Discover Centre, 985 Jim Tovey Blvd., off Lakeshore Road between Dixie and Cawthra Roads.
