Multiple main routes will be closed for hours this weekend due to a parade celebrating the Sikh faith happening in Mississauga.

The parade is happening on Saturday in the Malton area of Mississauga and will see parts of Airport Road and Morningstar Drive have rotating closures for most of the day.

The event is a celebration of Khalsa Day, which commemorates the establishment of the Sikh community in 1699, according to the Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwaras Council. Also known as Vaisakhi, Khalsa Day is also the start of the Sikh New Year.

Peel Public Works says the road closures will be in place on Saturday in the following areas:

  • Airport Road – Closed from Slough Street to Derry Road from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Morningstar Drive – Closed from Airport Road to Goreway Drive from 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Morningstar Drive – Closed from Goreway Drive to east city limits from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Large crowds of thousands gathered in Toronto last weekend for Khalsa Day events, which also saw appearances by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.

Some participants chanted and carried banners emblazoned with slogans calling for a state separate from India, known as Khalistan. India formally summoned Canada’s deputy high commissioner Monday citing “disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event.”

India’s foreign ministry didn’t specify what it took issue with, but noted there were displays of separatism and alleged this illustrates Canada tolerating “extremism and violence.”

The annual Khalsa Day parade runs on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
