This week’s weather: Heatwaves return to southern Ontario

Another round of hot and humid conditions are set to hit southern Ontario.

So far, the season has brought two extremes: heavy rain and uncomfortable warmth. Of the two, it looks like the hot weather is back.

Environment Canada has issued a multi-day heat warning for southern Ontario.

Daytime highs are forecasted to rise to 29 degrees Celcius, with humidex values near 40.

As of today (July 14), it will be mostly cloudy with occasional sunny breaks. Daytime temperatures will reach 26 C.

It won’t get much cooler by the evening, with temperatures falling just five degrees to 21 C. The skies will turn cloudy, bringing a 40 per cent chance of overnight rain that could develop into a thunderstorm.

Monday is anticipated to be mostly cloudy. There is a 40 per cent chance of rain in late morning, which is expected to intensify into a thunderstorm by the afternoon. Wind speed could also pick up to 20 km/h. Temperatures will rise to 29 C but with the humidex reaching 38, it will feel significantly hotter.

The UV index will hit high at level 7. Environment Canada advises protecting your skin when the UV index is three or higher, particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m

Additionally, Health Canada says that if outdoors, individuals should seek shade, wear protective clothing and hats, apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, avoid tanning, use UV-protective sunglasses, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Environment Canada notes on its website that those affected by the heat warning are urged to drink plenty of water regularly, even before they feel thirsty, to decrease the risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.

By the evening, temperatures will slip to 19 C, while the skies will get cloudier by midnight.

Though 29 C temperatures return on Tuesday, there is a 60 per cent chance of rain. Cloudy skies will persist into the evening, and there is a 40 per cent possibility of more rain. Temperatures will dip to 15 C.

The heatwave advisory will most likely end today, but Environment Canada advises residents to monitor for further updates.

Wednesday will be a mix of sun and clouds, and it is the last day of the week that meteorologists call for rain. Temperatures will climb to 25 C, where they will remain for most of the day. Cloudy periods will move in by the evening as temperatures reach a chilly 12 C.

Sunshine is promising on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Daytime highs will soar between 24 C and 27 C. If you’re looking to head outdoors for errands or fun activities, these might be the best days!

In the evenings, temperature lows will hover between 11 C and 15 C.
