Strike over at Pearson Airport in Mississauga.

Food and beverage service on board some flights leaving Pearson Airport in Mississauga is still being affected by labour action despite a tentative deal struck Sunday night between striking airline catering workers and the airport-area company that employs them.

Pearson officials said in a post to social media Monday afternoon the 800 or so Gate Gourmet workers, who are voting on the deal today, could be back on the job as soon as Tuesday.

Pending ratification of the deal, though, Pearson noted there still may be disruptions to food service on some flights.

“Travellers may have heard a tentative agreement with the company that supplies catering to airlines has been reached,” airport officials said in a post to X (formerly Twitter). “Should the agreement be ratified today, it is expected the airline caterers could return to work as early as Tuesday. At this time, food and beverage services for some flights are still being affected by the labour action. Food services inside the airport remain unaffected.”

The Gate Gourmet workers, who prepare and deliver food and beverages to aircraft operated by Air Canada, WestJet and a number of other major airlines, went on strike just after midnight on April 16. They hit the picket lines in search of better wages and benefits.

Word came early Monday morning the two sides had reached an agreement on Sunday night that, if ratified, would end the nearly two-week-old work stoppage.

Teamsters Local Union 647 said the settlement was being voted on by members on Monday.
