Mississauga man charged with dangerous driving on ATV.

A Mississauga man is facing numerous charges after the driver of an ATV led police on a brief chase and then allegedly assaulted an officer while resisting arrest in the Muskoka region in cottage country some 200 kilometres north of Toronto.

OPP said the incident unfolded on Monday night at about 9 p.m. in the town of Bracebridge when police received a public complaint that a person was riding an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) “with alcohol openly available.”

After responding officers found the ATV and tried to pull it over, the person riding it fled from police and “began driving in a very unsafe manner in traffic,” Bracebridge OPP said in a news release on Wednesday.

The officers called off the brief pursuit due to safety concerns for the public, police said.

A short time later, police spotted a man believed to have been the person operating the ATV as he walked along a local street.

After a brief struggle, the man was arrested.

Darryl Hayes, 41, of Mississauga, is charged with:

  • operation while impaired
  • refuse to comply with breath demand
  • dangerous operation
  • operation while prohibited
  • flight from peace officer
  • assault police with intent to resist arrest
  • assault peace officer
  • obstruct peace officer

He was further determined to be wanted on two outstanding warrants in other jurisdictions, according to OPP. He was held in custody and scheduled to appear for a bail hearing on Wednesday in Bracebridge court.
