Ontario’s police watchdog group says a Peel police officer is facing an assault charge related to an arrest in Brampton last summer.

The Special Investigations Unit says the charge comes from an incident on June 21, 2023, where a Peel Regional Police officer arrested a 33-year-old man in Brampton.

A spokesperson for the SIU declined to comment on when investigators began looking into the 2023 incident but clarified it was separate from a Brampton arrest on the same day where a man had his arm broken during a takedown.

SIU Director Joseph Martino said in a release there are “reasonable grounds” that a Peel Regional Police constable assaulted a 33-year-old man during the arrest.

The SIU says Karanveer Singh has been charged with one count of assault.

“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” the watchdog agency said in a release.

Peel Regional Police did not immediately respond to questions from Insauga.com on whether the charged officer is still on active duty, or has received any reprimands or training related to the arrest.

The SIU is an independent civilian government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers which may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and the discharge of a firearm at a person.
