Oshawa Library can now digitize old photos, records and more

Oshawa Libraries can remember it for you with their newly launched Memory Lab.

The McLaughlin Library branch opened the Memory Lab on April 16. It features a wide array of equipment designed to digitize analog records like photographs, audio cassettes, vinyl records and VHS tapes.

The lab is open to anyone over 18 years old with a valid library card in good standing. Library members book a single three-hour session with the equipment in a given week.

However, they must sign a waiver to use the technology which will hold them liable for any damages. Additionally, no food or drink is permitted in the lab.

Sessions must be booked at least 48 hours in advance of the user’s desired appointment.

All equipment is self-serve so the library asks lab users to bring someone along if they are uncomfortable with a computer. However, staff will be on hand to explain the equipment and help with any technical issues.

Users must remain in the room during their session and bring along a USB flash drive or external hard drive with at least 32 gigabytes of space.

The memory lab can only be used for lawful content. This means nothing

  • Prohibited by provincial or federal law.
  • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
  • In violation of another’s intellectual property rights.
