Celebration Square in Mississauga’s downtown core is expected to welcome tens of thousands of people over three days this weekend as a major cultural festival and music concert once again come to town.

The 19th annual Mosaic Festival celebrates the “rich art, culture, heritage and cuisine of South Asian Canadians in a family oriented free festival featuring artists from Pakistan, India, the U.S. and Canada,” organizers said.

Running Friday through Sunday, the festival is one of the larger events on the summer and fall schedule at the downtown Mississauga venue.

Hours are Friday from 3 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m. All ages are welcome and admission is free.

Rock the Coliseum, the independent music component of the Mosaic Festival, takes place on Sunday from 4 to 11 p.m. Founded in 2006, the concert features local youth bands as well as well-known independent bands from across the province.

All ages are welcome to attend the indie music festival and admission is free.

Organizers of the Mosaic Festival, which is sponsored by TD, said this year’s event also celebrates Mississauga’s 50th year as a city.

An outdoor visual arts exhibition by 23 local artists is part of the celebration.

Organizers said visitors to the Mosaic Festival will be treated to music, dance, folklore, Bollywood, food and shopping in the heart of Mississauga.

Rock the Coliseum is Mississauga’s longest-running all-ages, free indie music festival, organizers say. Over the years, it has hosted some of the finest musical talent from across Canada before they became success stories, they added.

This year’s concert, which has moved to the main stage at Celebration Square, is headlined by Juno Award-winner Haviah Mighty!

Both the Mosaic Festival and Rock the Coliseum are produced by the Canadian Community Arts Initiative, a group that presents visual art, literary art, dance, theatre, film and music for the enjoyment and education of the community.
