A popular Italian restaurant that is one of several new places slated to open inside the rejuvenated Sherwood Village (formerly known as Sheridan Mall) has officially opened its doors.

According to YourCityWithIN, Il Fornello–a popular Toronto and GTA chain restaurant with over half a dozen locations–opened its newest Mississauga location earlier this week.

The long-standing brand has been around for over 30 years and was one of the first restaurants to introduce wood-fired pizza to Toronto. Since its inception in 1986, it has also introduced a sizeable plant-based menu.

While the chain has multiple locations throughout Ontario, the newest one in Mississauga also boasts Cafe Alba, which offers coffee, pastries, sandwiches, salads, gelato and pizza.

The cafe began serving customers shortly before the restaurant officially opened its doors on June 24.

As far as food goes, Il Fornello offers antipasti (focaccia, calamari, burrata, cashew burrata, eggplant parmigiana and more), salad, pizza, pasta, salmon and more. The restaurant also boasts a sizeable wine and cocktail menu that features a few notable beverages, including an iced tiramisu cocktail.

Reservations for the restaurant are now open.

While Il Fornello is the latest addition to the long-standing shopping centre, several other new businesses have been appearing at Sherwood Village–a mall that sat largely empty as long-time tenants closed down or moved on.

Once home to a Dominion grocery store, Eaton’s and Zellers that served as anchors, the old Sheridan Mall was filled with the likes of Laura Secord, Music World, St. Clair Paint & Wallpaper, Radio Shack, Bittner’s, Lewiscraft, Grand & Toy, Batta Shoes, Coles Books, Becker’s Milk, Petland, Embassy Cleaners, Singer’s Sewing Centre, movie theatres, a smoke shop, clothing stores and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. The mall saw new life when Target opened a store in the centre, but Target’s foray into Canada was short-lived.

Now, the mall–with a revamped facade–is also home to the new Golf On Lounge simulator, Aplus Sports and Lambton Galleries. In the near future, the mall will be home to six full-sized pickleball courts.
