It's going to feel like 40c as heat warning continues in Southern Ontario

The city is offering residents some relief from the heat wave sweeping across Brampton and much of southern Ontario.

In an official public release, Peel Region’s Medical Officer of Health has relayed that both standard and extended heat warning thresholds have been reached in Brampton and Mississauga. This dispatch comes almost immediately after Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) indicated that numerous Southern Ontario communities were subject to a heat warning earlier today.

The city has opened heat relief locations in all public access buildings, including City Hall, recreation centres and libraries during regular business hours. Splash pads and the Chinguacousy Park Wading Pool are also open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting.

According to the representatives within Peel Region, heat warnings are issued when Ontario’s Ministry of Health concludes that there is a likelihood of two ongoing days of temperatures 31 C or higher. Additional variables taken into account for provincial heat warnings also include overnight temperatures of over 20 C.

In light of circumstances surrounding ongoing weather conditions, Peel Region officials have detailed safety tips on how to stay safe as extreme temperatures continue. While basic summer guidelines are touched upon, such as staying hydrated, finding shade and monitoring personal vitals, other health-related subjects were highlighted as well.

Specifically, Peel Region urges residents to monitor individuals who live on their own who are potentially at risk of heat-related illnesses, such as senior citizens.
