Parking in a bike lane is about to get much more expensive in Brampton as the city is set to jack up fines to more than four times the current rate.

A report to Brampton City Council in January showed the city was considering a re-jig of its parking fine structure when it comes to blocking bike lanes, which comes with a price tag of $35.

But that fine will be getting more than four times more costly for Brampton drivers as the city is expected to increase the penalty to $150.

A bylaw amendment on the council agenda this week has been proposed to allow for the increase, which the city says is in line with what other cities charge drivers for the same offense, and improve safety.

The planned increase will see Brampton have the same fine as Toronto at $150, but slightly more expensive than Ottawa at $125. Other municipalities more comparable to Brampton have lower rates, like Mississauga at $55 and Hamilton at $33.

The increase follows the city putting the brakes on changing downtown parking fees for 2024, deciding to postpone until to 2027 with fees of $2.50 per hour, $11.25 per day and $100 per month.

The updated fees will be increasing when the changes are finally introduced, but so will the amount of free parking time as the changes will also double downtown free parking from one hour to two.
