Be ready when disaster strikes with emergency kit and plan in Brampton

From floods and high winds to snow storms and extreme heat, the city wants you to be prepared for any emergency in Brampton.

Monday is the start of National Emergency Week and the City of Brampton is reminding all residents about the importance of making an emergency plan with a community event this weekend.

The event is being held at Bramalea City Centre and will have members of Brampton’s Emergency Management Office on hand to teach you how to make an emergency plan for your household, and a kit that will help you and your family be self-sufficient during a crisis for at least 72 hours.

“It is important to ensure that your entire family is prepared in the event of an emergency or disaster,” the city says. “You may not always be together when these events take place, so it is important you have plans for making sure you are able to contact one another.”

The city’s emergency preparedness event is sponsored by Enbridge and runs on Saturday at the upper-level wi-fi lounge at Bramalea City Centre.

If you can’t make the event then you can follow these tips to help make sure you’re ready in an emergency:

Prepare a home escape plan:

  • Draw a floor plan of your home and identify all rooms on each floor
  • Plan at least two escape routes from each room where possible (doors, windows and stairways)
  • Have a predetermined meeting place outside of your neighbourhood where your family will reconnect if you are separated
  • The location of your emergency kit(s)
  • Go over the plan with everyone in your home and practice at least once a year so every member of your family knows what to do.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

Emergency kits prepare you and your family to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

Kits should include:

  • Food
  • Water
  • Extra set of car and house keys
  • Small amount of cash
  • Sleeping bag or warm blankets
  • Toiletries
  • First aid kit
  • Medicines
  • Supplies for pets
