Authentic Texas barbecue arrived in Clarington Friday morning with the opening of a Dickey’s Barbecue Pit on Highway 2 in Courtice.

The restaurant is the second in Durham (there is also a location in Pickering) and the sixth in Ontario.

The first Dickey’s opened in Dallas, Texas in 1941 by WW1 veteran Travis Dickey, who parlayed a gift of gab and a love of slow-cooked “Legit Texas Barbecue” into what is now the largest BBQ franchise in the world with more than 600 locations.

All the meats are smoked onsite in a hickory wood-burning pit to provide the authentic barbecue taste and Dickey’s is bringing the Halal (pork-free) version of their menu to the Courtice location, which had its grand opening at 11 a.m.

The signature beef brisket is the star of the menu, which also offers brisket and cheese sandwiches, beef short ribs and brisket plates, sliders and classic comfort sides like baked beans, stuffed baked potatoes and fries.

Dickey’s was named to Newsweek’s 2022 America’s Favorite Restaurant Chains list and USA Today 2021 readers’ choice awards and is a Top 500 franchise. The company is now led by CEO Laura Rea Dickey, who has been named among the 50 most influential women in the food service business.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Clarington is located at 1639 Highway 2 (at Trulls Road) in Courtice and is open 11-11 Monday to Wednesday, 11-midnight Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 11-11 Sundays.
