A development planned near an Oakville GO station calls for two towers with one as high as 61 floors.

The project is proposed for Cross Avenue, just west of Argus Road in the area now known as Midtown. Trafalgar Road and the QEW are located nearby.

Across from the Oakville GO station, the property is now occupied by smaller buildings that house a private school, dental clinic, law office and lighting store and take up both 157 and 165 Cross Avenue.

Along with the 61-storey building, the second structure will climb to 45 floors and combined both will have planned housing for 1,198 units with a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments. They will both sit on a shared three-storey C-shaped podium.

The buildings will also be designed to house offices as well as retail and commercial space on the lower floors, and contain seven levels of parking for both cars and bikes.

A consultant’s report prepared by the developer said the project will contribute to the transformation of Midtown Oakville which is expected to become a mixed-use, high-density and transit-oriented community, complete with a new internal road network and a wide mix of residential and non-residential uses.

Recently Oakville decided to send plans for Midtown back to the drawing board with a view to lower density expectations. This follows pushback from the community that often complained that housing targets in Midtown were too extreme and would create a concrete jungle of sterile high-rises that would lead to increased traffic, noise and pollution.

Still, the developer for this new project intends to move forward and is seeking changes to Oakville’s official plan and zoning bylaws that will allow it to proceed.

A public meeting on the 157-165 Cross Avenue project will take place on May 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road and through a videoconference broadcast.
