6-year-old boy hit and killed by school bus in Vaughan.

A six-year-old boy was struck and killed by a school bus north of Toronto early this morning.

York Regional Police said the child was struck in a residential neighbourhood in the community of Kleinburg just after 8 a.m. and died of his injuries a short time later at the scene.

The collision occurred near Kleinburg Summit Way, by Kipling Avenue and Kirby Road in Vaughan.

Police are still investigating circumstances surrounding the deadly collision and haven’t said if the boy was alone at the time or with a family member.

It’s also not yet known if any other schoolchildren were with the young victim at the time or how many kids were on board the bus.

According to police, the driver of the school bus remained on scene and was assessed by paramedics. The driver is cooperating with the police investigation.

Describing the incident as a “terrible tragedy,” police at the scene told reporters investigators would be at the location for a long period of time in an effort to determine exactly what happened.

Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca wrote in a post to X (formerly Twitter) that the entire city “is in mourning following the tragic death of a young boy who was struck by a vehicle in Kleinburg. There are no words that can adequately express our sympathy and condolences to the family, friends and classmates of this child as they grieve this unthinkable loss.”

Del Duca also praised police, firefighters and paramedics “for their efforts to save the boy.”

Police are asking anyone in the area with security or dashcam video to provide it to investigators as they look into what happened.
