Arrests made in Mississauga robbery.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with robbery while an older teen faces other charges after a swarming robbery near Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga.

Peel Regional Police said in a news release on Friday an 18-year-old man from Etobicoke was confronted by a group of teens and robbed of his possessions last Saturday in the area of City Centre Drive.

According to police, one of the culprits demanded the victim’s property. Fearing for his safety, he handed over his belongings and the young males fled the scene, police added.

A short time later, police arrested several suspects inside Square One. Officers also recovered a loaded handgun.

Joseph Lee, 18, of Mississauga, is charged with:

  • disguise with intent
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • carrying concealed weapon

He was held for a bail hearing and made a first appearance in Brampton court.

A 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with robbery.

He was released and will appear in Brampton court at a later date.

Police said two other youths, ages 14 and 15, were released unconditionally.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators at 905-453-2121, ext. 1133, or Peel Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

An increase in similar incidents and other crime at Square One in recent months has brought additional police officers and security guards to the huge mall in a concerted effort to clamp down on violence and robberies.

A beefed-up police patrol presence can be seen inside and around the shopping centre since January.
